Backing Up Computer Files

At one time or another we have heard people asking about restoring files that have been lost on their computer. There is no doubt that the things we put in our computers are very important. Losing these can be very frustrating and sometimes costly as well. The best way that anyone can prevent being in a situation like this, is by backing up files on their computer. Simply put, you make copies of the existing files and store them in a separate location. In the event that your computer malfunctions or is infected with a virus, you will have still have a separate copy of everything you need. This is an easy process that not many people bother about, but it can save you from insanity! Below are some easy to do basic options.

  1. Online storage. For those who have access to the internet, storing files online may be a good option. With this method you will have access to your files anytime and anywhere, as long as there’s an internet connection. Many of these offer the service for free on a certain number of files. If you need a large amount of storage space an added cost is usually charged. Do make sure that you use a reputable online file storage company that will guarantee the privacy and security of your files.
  2. CD’s. Most computers these days have a CD or DVD writer. This allows you to burn copies of your files onto a blank CD. If you want something that you can actually keep with you then this can be great. For those that can make DVD copies then there is not much of a problem. However for those with CD writers only, you may end up with a lot of CD’s since it can only store a limited amount of data. Another downside is that once the CD is damaged the data may be lost.
  3. USB Flash Drive. Today this is one of the most commonly used gadgets users have. These portable storage drives have a huge capacity. You can actually do more than store your important files. With a flash drive that has a large memory you can store everything in your computer — even your entire operating system. The best part is that since these are small it is not a bother to carry them around with you. As long as your flash drive does not get infected with a virus or damaged then your files will be safe.
  4. External Hard Drive. If you are looking to do some serious backing up then this could be a good choice. It is ideal if you are looking to back up everything in your computer. While a USB Flash drive can also do this a hard drive may be a better choice for the entire system. Most of these are used with a USB so you can just plug it in and use it. Of course, something like this does not come cheap. If you are on a limited budget then this may not be for you.
